Pardew retains interest in QPR’s Remy

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew remains interested in France striker Loic Remy, after a move to Liverpool from Queens Park Rangers collapsed.

Remy, 27, scored 14 goals on loan with the Magpies last term, prompting a bid from Liverpool this summer.

However, the transfer fell through, leaving the ex-Marseille forward to return to QPR for pre-season.

“It’s a straightforward deal if Loic and QPR decide to do business with us,” Pardew told BBC Newcastle.

26 appearances (14 league goals)

“The results speak for themselves, the fans loved him and I think it’s a great place for him personally.

“There is a lot of baggage in the way at the moment because of what happened at Liverpool, and the fact he has a parent club in QPR.

“But I wouldn’t say we’re not interested in him, of course we would be.”

Pardew has brought in six signings so far this summer in forwards Ayoze Perez and Emmanuel Riviere, midfielders Jack Colback, Remy Cabella and Siem De Jong plus defender Daryl Janmaat.

Former Marseille striker Remy has scored five goals in 24 appearances for France, and played at the 2014 World Cup, coming off the substitutes’ bench to feature against Ecuador and Germany.

Dundee United add keeper Szromnik

Dundee United have signed Polish Under-21 international goalkeeper Michal Szromnik.

The 21-year-old joins on a three-year deal after an undisclosed fee was agreed with Arka Gydnia, who play in the Polish 1 Liga.

Szromnik will provide competition for compatriot Radoslaw Cierzniak, who has another year to run on his contract.

“I see Michal coming in and challenging for the number one jersey immediately,” said manager Jackie McNamara.

“He has a lot of experience for someone his age and every aspect of his game has strong foundations.

“His arrival will add to our options and create a more competitive environment for the goalkeepers already here.”

Blackpool agree deal for Cubero

Costa Rica midfielder Jose Miguel Cubero has agreed to join Blackpool, subject to a work permit being granted.

The Seasiders have paid Herediano an undisclosed fee for the 27-year-old, who has spent all of his professional career playing in his home country.

Cubero appeared in four of Costa Rica’s five games at the World Cup in Brazil as they reached the last eight before losing on penalties to the Netherlands.

He has agreed a one-year deal, with the option of a further 12 months.

“It has always been a dream to play in England and grow as a footballer, so it’s a great opportunity,” he told the club website.

Cubero is the sixth summer signing made by manager Jose Riga, taking the number of senior players in his squad to 13.

Costa Rica Costa Rica surprised many in Brazil, topping a World Cup group that included England, Italy and Uruguay

Riga had been working with a squad of only eight during pre-season, with the club’s recruitment slowed by a dispute over transfer policy between him and chairman Karl Oyston.

The signings of defender Peter Clarke, midfielders Jacob Mellis and Tomasz Cywka on Monday, plus the arrival of striker Nathan Delfouneso on Tuesday, have swelled that number but they are still without a senior goalkeeper.

Cubero posted pictures of himself at Bloomfield Road shaking hands with Riga on his Twitter page  on Wednesday and he underwent a medical on Thursday before agreeing the move.

All four of his appearances at the World Cup were as a substitute, coming off the bench in the victories over Uruguay and Italy that confirmed the Central Americans as Group D winners, as well as in the second-round win over Greece and the quarter-final defeat by the Dutch.

The formalities of the deal are still to be completed.

Reading have been trying to find a buyer since last October and majority shareholder Anton Zingarevich stood down from the board in June.

Khunying Sasima told the club website:  “I am absolutely delighted to be entering into this partnership with Sir John, and working with a club with such a strong reputation.

“I and my fellow investors look forward to supporting Sir John and working toward a successful future together. We are excited about what lies ahead.”

West Ham sign Jenkinson on loan

West Ham have signed Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old had been linked with several Premier League clubs, but opted for the Hammers.

“I’m clearly seen as a big part of things here and hopefully I can prove my worth because it is an important year for me,” Jenkinson said.

The right-back has slipped down the pecking order at Arsenal following the recent signings of full-backs Mathieu Debuchy, 29, and Calum Chambers, 19.

France international Debuchy joined from Newcastle for an undisclosed fee in July and youngster Chambers moved from Southampton, for £16m, earlier this week.

Jenkinson, who has won one England cap, played 22 games in all competitions for the Gunners last season.

He said: “I was flattered to have a lot of options but, deep down, if I was being honest with myself West Ham was always the place I wanted to go to.”

The former Charlton Athletic player becomes West Ham’s sixth new player, following the signing of Ecuador striker Enner Valencia from Pachuca, midfielder Diego Poyet from Charlton, striker Mauro Zarate from Velez Sarsfield, Anderlecht’s Senegal international midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate and Ipswich full-back Aaron Cresswell.

Dunne retires from Republic duty

Republic of Ireland defender Richard Dunne has retired from international duty after winning 80 caps.

Dunne, 34, made his debut for the national side against Greece in 2000 and won his final cap in a friendly against Kazakhstan in October.

“Retiring from international football has been an extremely difficult decision,” said QPR centre-back Dunne.

“Richard is truly a player for Ireland to be proud of”

John Delaney FAI chief executive Republic manager Martin O’Neill hailed Dunne as a “remarkable player for both club and country”.

The former Manchester City, Everton and Aston Villa player represented Ireland at two major championships – the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2012 – and scored eight goals for his country in total.

“I have represented Ireland since I was 15 years of age, and have thoroughly enjoyed all the highs and lows that have come with playing for my country,” Dunne added.

“I will continue to support the team as they embark upon their new campaign under Martin O’Neill, and have every faith that they will qualify for France 2016.”

Dunne’s focus will now be on QPR as they prepare for life back in the Premier League, and O’Neill added: “I had the pleasure of working with him at Aston Villa, where he had a big influence on the field.

Richard Dunne and Andres Iniesta Dunne was ever-present in the Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2012 campaign and faced eventual champions Spain in the group stage

“He has consistently given 100% every time he has been called on by his country also. I wish him all the best in his club career.”

Football Association of Ireland chief executive John Delaney added: “Richard has been a tremendous servant to his country, and is truly a player for Ireland to be proud of.”

England record an honour – Williams

By Tony Leighton Women’s football reporter England midfielder Fara Williams says it will be a “great honour” to win a record-breaking 130th cap in Sunday’s friendly against Sweden.

The Liverpool midfielder would become England’s most capped player, passing Rachel Yankey’s total,  if selected at Hartlepool United’s Victoria Park.

“I never set out to make that sort of achievement,” said Williams, 30.

“I just wanted to play and get better as I went along, but it will be a great honour to set a new record.”

Fara Williams Age: 30 Club: Liverpool Ladies Honours: Women’s Super League, FA Cup, two League Cups England debut: 24 November 2001 v Portugal Caps: 129; Goals: 37 Williams recently revealed that she was homeless for six years earlier in her career and said she “matured quicker than most” because of that experience.

“That period of my life made me stronger,” she added.

“Football helped me through it and it’s amazing now to hopefully be getting my 130th England cap on Sunday.”

Mark Sampson, who took charge of the national team after last year’s dismissal of Hope Powell, described Williams as “undoubtedly amongst the best in the world”.

He added: “Fara is incredibly talented, the sort of technically gifted player that England doesn’t normally produce.

“Sunday will be a very special day for her and I hope she thoroughly enjoys it, but I know she will also use it as a platform to kick on and try to get even better.”

Almost 13 years after making her debut, Williams is likely to captain England in what will be a difficult encounter against a strong Swedish side.

England have only won one of their past 14 meetings with the Swedes, who are ranked fifth in the world – three places higher than Sampson’s team.

When they met in a friendly last July, Sweden’s 4-1 win preceded the disastrous Euro 2013 that led to Powell’s sacking and Sampson’s subsequent appointment.

The England coach, in charge for the 10th time, said: “Sweden are a physically strong side with some fantastic players, so it will be tough.

England lost 4-1 to Sweden the last time they met – in a Euro 2013 warm-up match

“We’ve got to go eye-to-eye with them, compete for every ball and try to get on top of them – this game should show where we are in terms of our progress.”

Sunday’s game comes just 18 days before England face Wales in a 2015 World Cup qualifier in Cardiff, where a draw will be good enough for Sampson’s side to reach the finals in Canada.

Sampson has been forced to make late changes to his squad after goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis and midfielder Dunia Susi dropped out through injury.

Birmingham City’s Jo Potter has replaced Susi and Notts County keeper Carly Telford has stepped in for Brown-Finnis.

Telford’s inclusion in the squad means that six of the players are from the North East, so should feel at home at Hartlepool.

Steph Houghton, Jill Scott, Lucy Bronze, Jordan Nobbs, Demi Stokes and Telford all began their careers with Women’s Super League second tier club Sunderland.

England squad: Bardsley (Manchester City), Chamberlain (Arsenal), Telford (Notts County), Bonner (Liverpool), Bronze (Liverpool), Greenwood (Everton), Houghton (Manchester City), A Scott (Arsenal), Stokes (University of South Florida), Bassett (Chelsea), Moore (Birmingham City), J Scott (Manchester City), Williams (Liverpool), Potter (Birmingham City), Nobbs (Arsenal), Carney (Birmingham City), Aluko (Chelsea), Clarke (Notts County), Dowie (Liverpool), Duggan (Manchester City), Kirby (Reading), Sanderson (Boston Breakers), Taylor (Washington Spirit).
